Dirty Dozen Brass Band

While traditional numbers infused with a DDBB flavor have always been crowd-pleasing staples of the group’s repertoire, it’s the Dirty Dozen Brass Band’s willingness to look beyond the New Orleans songbook and find connections amongst a wider range of music that has endeared them to critics, fellow musicians and a multi-generational, global audience. They’ve been embraced enthusiastically by the jam-band followers at Bonnaroo as well as by the devotees who flock to the yearly New Orleans Jazz Fest. Acts like the Black Crowes and Widespread Panic have taken them on tour and artists from Dizzy Gillespie to Elvis Costello to Norah Jones have joined them in the studio. In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, DDBB participated in the From the Big Apple to the Big Easy benefit at New York City’s Madison Square Garden and offered its own response to the aftermath of the disaster with an acclaimed 2006 song-by-song remake of Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On. Their music has been featured on the HBO series, Treme, named after the New Orleans mid-city neighborhood where the band had formed, and the group performed on screen with Galactic and rapper Juvenile in Season 2. New Orleans remains a wellspring of musical inspiration and DDBB is a living, breathing embodiment of the continued vitality and evolution of the sounds of the city.

Doors Open: 1pm
Event Starts: 1:30pm
Event Ends: 2:30pm

ALL AGES WELCOME!
Some food will be provided - Bring a tasty finger food if you'd like to share!

What is the Abundance Swap?

It is a community gathering to celebrate our abundance and offer an alternative to the Holiday shopping season.

Step 1.  Find 3 quality items in your home, shop or office that someone would enjoy as a gift.
Step 2.  Bring them to the Historic Ashland Armory.
Step 3.  Then use the gifts you take home to reduce your new gift purchases!

"Three simple steps, that's it. This will be our own Holiday shopping event, a round of giving and receiving that includes no money and no new demands on resources. For some of us it may also be a stretching exercise - a chance to let go of stuff, or let go of worries that we might not get back "our fair share", or more fully let go of commercially-planted ideas that it's not a real gift if it's not shiny & new from the store."

Phutureprimitive

Phutureprimitive is the moniker of Bay Area producer and songwriter Rain. Early childhood photos reveal Rain sitting at the piano plinking keys, grinning from ear to ear… a true sign of things to come. Continuing his early fascination, Rain was later drawn to electronic music, inspired by its ability to combine the best of organically played instruments and the synthetic pleasures of sounds more exotic to the human ear. After beginning a DJ career in the 90s, Rain began incorporating the music he was making in his home studio into his DJ sets. That was all it took to trigger a full blown love affair with electronic music and the process of its creation… and Phutureprimitive was born.

Phutureprimitive’s music is best described as dripping wet love drops of nasty mind melting sonic bliss. Lush melodies drift across intricate rhythms, groove heavy beats and warm, fuzzy bass lines. Often exploring a dark and dense palette, there is also a profound sense of tranquility and beauty, engaging the listener into hypnotic movement and often escalating into a full-on kinetic experience. Shimmering with cinematic qualities, his music ultimately speaks to the body, mind and soul.

Collie Buddz

Collie Buddz follows a string of successful one-off singles and collaborations with his Blue Dreamz EP a seven-track project due out Friday, Sept. 4 on Louder Than Life/Sony Music.

The EP kicks off with what can best be described as vintage Collie Buddz on "Blue Dreamz" as he explains, "Last night I had a dream that, I'm sittin on a hundred pound weed stack, floatin on it like a real boss, nuh bodda touch it when yuh come cross". The Bermuda-raised artist blends the bedroom with the dance floor on the undeniable catchy romp "Like Yuh Miss Me". Backed by soaring synthesizers and addictive percussion, Buddz utilizes his trademark melodic vocals to ask his girl to "f**k me like yuh miss me/ pretend it's been about 10 years now." It may seem direct—and it is!—but this is a guy who lives his life on the road and, no doubt, misses that good love he can only get at home. It's a sentiment anyone who's travelled for work or been in a long distance relationship can relate to.
Bringing delight to patient Collie fans worldwide"Blue Dreamz" quenches the thirst for new music and leaves you wishing it was summer year round. Catch Buddz on his "Blue Dreamz Tour" in a city near you.

EMANCIPATOR

A sleeping giant of the electronic music world, Douglas Appling - more commonly known as Emancipator - has quietly established himself as a mainstay in the electronic music scene since the release of his debut album, Soon It Will Be Cold Enough in 2006.

Classically trained as a violinist from an early age, Appling's organic approach to trip-hop and downtempo draws inspiration from a wide range of international cultures and musical genres, culminating in a refreshingly authentic brand of electronic music that has infiltrated global consciousness.

Now known as the Emancipator Ensemble, the talented four-piece is pushing the limits of what it means to be electronic musicians through their compelling, sophisticated performances.

Tony Simon, a/k/a Blockhead, has been making and releasing utterly distinctive, funky and emotive music for the last two decades.  Blockhead grew up in downtown New York City. As the son of an artist, surrounded by visual culture, he early on found that his passion was for music, for the sonic. A fan of a whole range of sounds, especially hip-hop, Blockhead steadily built a tremendous collection of tapes and later CDs from innumerable artists, a quiet accumulation of knowledge and know-how. WU WEI

Wu Wei [pronounced 'woo way'], a name derived from the Taoist path of non-action, has tapped into a universal song and brought its melodies into the physical realm. The result is a uniquely unifying effect, transcending language and cultural identity to remind the rest of humanity of their fundamental unity. The 23-year-old Los Angeles to Humboldt County transplant has spent his recent years perfecting his attenuation to the rhythms of the natural world creating intentional music to bring the planet together. He strives to combine the soul reaching sounds of ambient IDM together with the earthy bass of futuristic world hip-hop. He adds in a mix of orchestral instruments with the liberating sounds of nature to bring his music home and to keep in synch with the soul of the world. His production skills are only part of this terrestrial-magician’s slew of crowd charming concoctions. His DJ prowess creates connection to the dancers and alignment to the commonality of movement. -- Tooesday Behr (The Untz)

Wu Wei has performed at such festivals as Lightning in a Bottle, Enchanted Forest, Northern Nights, Once Upon a Festival, Burning Man, and many more.

"On his EPs Abstractions and Have Faith, Wu Wei established himself as an artist that likes the ethereal as music as he likes dance beats. 2014 has been a busy year for him performing at west coast festivals, street fairs and even holding it down along with an all-star lineup at Sacred Spaces camp at Burning Man.

On Syncretic, Wu Wei holds onto some of his ethereal and uplifting influences. His use of field recordings and found sound are also evident while at the same time displaying an ability to move into some newer directions of psychedelic dub as well as having tunes like Sun Soaked, Gift Of Loss and Icarus, seeming to reflect back to artists like Sabres of Paradise. This all culminates into some of the most delightful electronic chillout music we’ve heard. For fans of Desert Dwellers, Dub Kirtan, Shen, Birds Of Paradise, Kalya Scintilla, XXYYXX, OnHell, Hypha, Sabres of Paradise and others." - Muti Music

Euforquestra

Eufórquestra (pronounced yoo-FOHR-keh-struh, think euphoria+orchestra) is energy and rhythm personified. An ever-evolving sound that has been influenced by music from all over the world with an emphasis on funk, pocket and groove. For over a decade the band has been igniting dance floors across the country, blending the roots of funk, soul, afrobeat, reggae and dub to create a sound that “explodes, dances and melts in your ear with sheer bliss” (Chris M. Slawecki; AllAboutJazz.com).

Eufórquestra’s fifth full-length record, FIRE, was produced by Kyle Hollingsworth (of The String Cheese Incident) and captures the passion and musical maturing of these road warriors. Over the course of 14 tracks, the band takes you on an hour-long adventure that will touch your heart and mind, and keep your fingers and toes tapping. A handful of special guests, including Elliot Martin (John Brown’s Body), Gabriel Mervine and Kim Dawson (The Motet) and Mr. Hollingsworth himself, put their own touches on the band’s already cohesive sound that is “tight and engineered to a fine, funky precision.” (Jeremy Frazier; Chicago Jam Scene) The result is a record that is distinctly modern, maintaining one foot in the future and firmly planting in the musical roots traditions of the past.

With almost 1,000 shows under their belt, Eufórquestra shows no sign of stopping. A perpetually heavy tour schedule keeps the band and fans happy, as performing live in front of an audience has always been the band’s top priority. As noted in a live show review by Grateful Web, “...the boys seem to play like the apocalypse will happen at any second and they want to die doing what they do best...”

AfroQBen is a multi-instrumentalist, one man concerto whose beats are infused with his own live instrumentation, rare vinyl samples and futuristic synths swirled into a one of a kind sonic experience.

DJ AND COSTUME CONTEST!

FRIDAY, OCT 30  6:30 PM  HISTORIC ASHLAND ARMORY

We are excited to announce that we are moving the Costume Contest out of the cold, wet morning of the race, to the warm indoors of the Friday night Pasta Party!

If you’re someone who never participated because the contest was too early, too cold, and occasionally too wet…then now is your chance! Come and test out your race costume, or come in a completely different costume! The contest will be held ON STAGE at the Historic Armory at 6:30pm during the Monster Ball Pasta Party, and will be emceed by OSF actor Christiana Clark

An awesome Silent Auction will be available for you to bid on and entertainment will be provided for a fun family evening. We'll have a DJ providing music, and the Costume Contest will now be part of the Pasta Party event and will held on the stage at the Historic Ashland Armory!

The pre-race Costume Contest has been MOVED to the Friday Night Pasta Party event! See below for details.

THE COSTUME CONTEST IS OPEN TO ALL MONSTER BALL ATTENDEES.

Judging will take place on the Armory stage in each category. (Emcee and Judges to be announced) Judges will be looking for costumes that YOU have created – not purchased through a costume vendor.  Winners in each category will be awarded a winner’s ribbon and will become a finalist for the overall best costume.

The Best Costume Finals will take place immediately following the category judging. Each category winner will compete in a costume parade on stage for first, second and third places for the best overall costume. Winners receive a Monster Dash winner’s trophy (past trophy shown below) and awesome gift certificates to local businesses!

Puss ‘n Boots Costume Ball & Auction

24th annual Puss ‘n Boots Costume Ball & Auction at the Historic Ashland Armory, which raises funds to find homes for the animals at the Jackson County Animal Shelter.

Saturday, October 24, 6:00 -10:30 PM

Tickets are $45.00 and include dinner and dessert catered by Café Dejeuner, and dancing to the tunes of The Bathtub Gin Serenaders. Spay/Neuter Your Pet (SNYP) will again offer a no-host wine and beer bar, with money raised going directly to spaying and neutering non-Shelter animals throughout Jackson County (bringing down the number of animals surrendered to the Shelter).

Of course, we’ll have fabulous items for bid in the Silent and Live auctions, plus an opportunity to donate toward our fabulous volunteer-supported programs that are saving lives at the Shelter.

Silent auction items include dinners and services, wine, beautiful one-of-a-kind items, pottery, and treasures in time for the holidays – with all money going to save lives.

Some of the Live Auction items include:

  • A one-of-a-kind animal-themed quilt
  • Dinner with veteran OSF actors
  • A one-week stay in beautiful Arcadia
  • A case of delicious wine, and many more!

AND, WHAT’S A HALLOWEEN PARTY WITHOUT A COSTUME CONTEST? YOU ARE A CREATIVE AND TALENT BUNCH OF REVELERS, AND WE LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING WHAT YOU COME UP WITH (INDIVIDUALLY OR AS A GROUP) THIS YEAR!

Please come prepared to raise your bidder number during the DOG PADDLE portion of the evening to make a 100% deductible donation to support our mission of increasing pet adoption, improving the quality of life for our animals, promoting spay/neuter, and supporting a foster program. Programs include:

  • The Pit Crew (specialty training for “bully breeds” – making them ore adoptable),
  • Project Street Dogs (spaying/neutering animals owned by homeless people),
  • 2-Fur-1 kitty adoption (FOTAS pays for the 2nd adoption, and

By turns wicked, funny, warm, romantic and touching, The Music Man is family entertainment at its best. Meredith Wilson's six-time, TONY Award winning musical comedy has been entertaining audiences since 1957 and is a family-friendly story to be shared with every generation.

The Music Man follows fast-talking traveling salesman Harold Hill as he cons the people of River City, Iowa into buying instruments and uniforms for a boys' band he vows to organize - this despite the fact he doesn't know a trombone from a treble clef. His plans to skip town with the cash are foiled when he falls for Marian the librarian, who transforms him into a respectable citizen by curtain's fall.

Book, Music & Lyrics by Meredith Willson
Directed by Peter Wickliffe
Starring Erny Rosales, Kristen Calvin, Catherine Hansen, Jianna Bull and Zaq Wentworth

Bringing the electronic music vibe to the yoga scene, and the sounds of yoga to the electronic dance scene, Desert Dwellers’ global sounds are the bridge between the worlds of dance and movement. Joining solid groove with sounds of serenity, their signature aesthetic feels as natural on the dance floor as it does after hours or on the mat. Due in no small part to Desert Dwellers’ pioneering spirit, the borders of Downtempo music has expanded dramatically.

These sound alchemists offer modern techniques that blend the edge of electronica with ancient sounds, offering a spellbinding hybrid with echoes of our past and future. The result has been the prolific production of genre blending dance tracks and chill-out grooves that make for truly memorable listening experiences. http://desertdwellers.org
