AFRO DEAD is a musical collective formed in 2022 by Aaron Feder (musical director/multi-instrumentalist/producer) to reimagine the music of legendary American roots band, the Grateful Dead, in various African musical styles.
In 2026 the project features Zimbabwean-American singer Lady Chi, best known for her work with Melvin Seals and JGB and the Jerry Garcia Symphonic Celebrations. The collective takes songs of the psychedelic pioneers The Grateful Dead, and re-arranges them, changing the grooves to afro-pop styles, such as Soukous, Afrobeat, High-Life, Reggae and more.
AFRO DEAD is a musical collective with a rotating cast of musicians and special guests on every stop of their tours; each show is a unique experience, bringing together Deadheads and world music fans wherever they play globally.
We are excited to announce the first installment of our new monthly event, Sounds With Substance, on March 27th at the newly remodeled Lounge at the Historic Ashland Armory. This event will feature top-shelf electronic music from the entire spectrum of electronic music genres! This event will have the feel of the old school underground raves that made the SWS team fall in love with electronic music. Dark room, big sound, minimal intentional stage design that will keep the attention where it belongs, on the music! For this first installment, we have invited our good friend Hyku to air his sounds, joined by N.O.X and DJ Samuel Lawrence to round out the lineup! Turbo Sound will be provided by Lawd Sound!
