15TH ANNUAL ABUNDANCE SWAP

15TH ANNUAL ABUNDANCE SWAP

What is THE ABUNDANCE SWAP?

It is a community gathering to celebrate our abundance and offer an alternative to the Holiday shopping season.

Sunday December 11, 2016

Doors Open Promptly at 1:00 pm, and the event begins at 1:30pm.  We'll end by 3:00 pm

For more info, please visit:  http://abundanceswap.org/

How to Participate...

Step 1

Find 3 quality items in your home, shop or office that someone would enjoy as a gift... fun, useful, interesting or beautiful items in really good shape that you feelyou can spare .

("Quality" doesn't mean "expensive". It means well-made, worthwhile, likely to be valued. The original price doesn't matter).

Step 2

Bring them to the Historic Ashland Armory. Don't just drop your stuff off. We're doing more than that. Bring the present of your presence. Stick around to visit, tell a story or two about what you brought to the person who wants it, and find some things that you'd like to take away to give as gifts to others (a gift to yourself is ok, too). There won't be any bargaining; you just bring what you're ready to give away and take away whatever you'd like.

Step 3

Then use the gifts you take home to reduce your new gift purchases.

Three simple steps, that's it. This will be our own Holiday shopping event, a round of giving and receiving that includes no money and no new demands on resources. For some of us it may also be a stretching exercise - a chance to let go of stuff, or let go of worries that we might not get back "our fair share", or more fully let go of commercially-planted ideas that it's not a real gift if it's not shiny & new from the store.

We'll have tea and simple treats to eat; bring a tasty sweet finger food to share if you’d like.

Rising Appalachia brings to the stage a collection of sounds, stories, and songs steeped in tradition and a devotion to world culture. Intertwining a deep reverence for folk music and a passion for justice, they have made it their life’s work to sing songs that speak to something ancient yet surging with relevance. Whether playing at Red Rocks or in rail cars, at Italian street fairs or to Bulgarian herbalists, this fiercely independent band has blazed a unique and colorful path across the globe. 11 years into their movement, Rising Appalachia believes that the roots of all these old songs are vital to our ever evolving soundscape.

Led by the collective voice of sisters Leah and Chloe, and joined by their beloved band – percussionist Biko Casini and bassist/guitarist David Brown – Rising Appalachia is a melting pot of folk music simplicity, textured songwriting, and those bloodline harmonies that only siblings can pull off. Listen for a tapestry of song, clawhammer banjo tunes, fiddle, double bass, acoustic guitar, djembe, barra, bodhran, spoken word, and a wealth of musical layering that will leave you called to action and lulled into rhythmic dance simultaneously.  It is both genre bending and familiar at the same time. Proudly born and raised in the concrete jungle of Atlanta, Georgia, sharpening their instincts in the mountains of Appalachia, and fine tuning their soul on the streets of New Orleans they have crafted a 6-album career from the dusts of their passion.

In 2015  Rising Appalachia founded the Slow Music Movement, to help maintain an independent musical spirit in the face of such a fast-paced world. They are creatively committed to keeping their work accessible at the local street level as well as expanding to larger audiences abroad, and have continued to maintain autonomy by self- managing, recording, producing and creating, and directing their work.

They are greatly honored to do the work that they do.

“Music is the tool with which we wield political prowess. Melody for the Roots of each of us…spreading song and sound around the globe. Music has become our script for vision- not just for aural pleasure, not just for hobby, but now as a means to connect and create in ways that we aren’t taught by mainstream culture. We are building community and tackling social injustice through melody, making the stage reach out with wide arms to gather this great family. It has taken on its own personality, carrying us all along the journey. Heres to poetic observations, social change, lyrical messages, political focus, symphonic coercing, ferocious bantering, bicycles and train tracks, primal will, fresh air, harmony, flow, and beautiful noise. ”- Leah Song.

“Green Album of the Year” – the Huffington Post

“Rising Appalachia seeks to showcase the beauty of the simple, the subtle, and the sometimes unseen with its soulful folk music”  – anonymous

Brett Dennen Band

Amiable West Coast singer/songwriter Brett Dennen first drew attention in 2004 with the single "Desert Sunrise." The tune, with its easy groove and soulful phrasing, garnered enough spins on KCRW to warrant the release of his self-titled debut the following year. Stylistically, Dennen's thoughtful, laid-back tunes fit in with the burgeoning singer/songwriter scene that had produced stars like Jason Mraz and Jack Johnson. He signed with Dualtone and released 2006's So Much More, followed two years later by Hope for the Hopeless. When he wasn't headlining his own tours, he could be found opening bills for Dave Matthews, Taj Mahal, Ziggy Marley, and Jackson Browne, among others. Dennen's fourth studio effort, Loverboy, arrived in 2011 and featured subtle African rhythms and more of a pop veneer. It was followed in 2013 by the sparser, acoustic-based Smoke and Mirrors, which was released by Atlantic. The album was a success and landed Dennen in Billboard's Top 200 for the first time. By this point he had also landed a number of prominent TV placements including the theme song of NBC's sitcom, About a Boy. His fifth album, 2016's Por Favor, was a rhythmic, stripped-down affair with a light reggae flair.

Lily & Madeleine

When Indianapolis sisters Lily and Madeleine Jurkiewicz first started making music together, it didn’t cross their minds that they could make a living at it. Although they now find themselves in an acclaimed full-fledged career, what got them here has nothing to do with money, and everything to do with the spirit.

Get Tickets

“The music will always be first,” says Lily. Indeed, Lily & Madeleine’s artistic souls are obvious to anyone who has heard their recordings. From the beginning, the sisters’ calling card has been the breathtaking and intuitive union of their voices.

“Their voices can pierce through the chaos of everyday life and actually make you stop what you’re doing.” American Songwriter

When the two come together in ecstatic and seamless “blood harmony,” it’s a sound that continues to haunt long after the songs are sung, leaving an electrical charge behind like a sparkling tracer in the air. Lily & Madeleine however, are equally distinctive as soloists as they are as harmony singers. When they step out individually as vocalists, Lily’s warm, smoky alto is the counterpoint to Madeleine’s crystalline, bell-like soprano.

Get Tickets

That calling card is just as clear on their new material as it is on the cover songs the duo uploaded to YouTube for fun in late 2012. It was through these first videos that producer Paul Mahern, a staple of the Midwest music scene and frontman for punk band Zero Boys, recognized something special in the sister’s sound and enlisted the help of songwriter Kenny Childers (Gentleman Caller). Mahern challenged the girls to write a song a day, with Childers as mentor.

It’s that experiment that would become Lily & Madeleine’s first EP, The Weight of the Globe. In early 2013, they released a sparse, simple version of first single, “In The Middle,” to YouTube. When a neighbor of Lily & Madeleine shared the video on Reddit, the song hit the site’s front page. Within hours the video received over a quarter of a million views. It also attracted the attention of Asthmatic Kitty Records. They quickly signed Lily & Madeleine and issued the EP on 10-inch.

Just a month after Globe dropped on vinyl, the duo re-entered the studio and recorded their self-titled debut, which was released in October of 2013 to both critical and fan acclaim. Of the music, Jon Pareles of the The New York Times writes, “the thing that flags them as extraordinary is their sibling vocal blend, deep and seamless and relaxed,” while American Songwriter describes, “Their voices can pierce through the chaos of everyday life and actually make you stop what you’re doing.”

Get Tickets

Since that release, the sisters have toured worldwide, including a sold-out U.K. tour and a very special capacity performance at the historic 1,200-seat Circle Theater with their hometown Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. They’ve played on live national TV (a slot on CBS “This Morning”) and were crowd favorites at 2014’s Lotus Festival. Yet, the girls have remained modest, sticking to hard work as their imperative.

As young as they are, Lily, 17, and Madeleine, 19, are their own women. The songs on Fumes acknowledge childhood’s end and announce the entrance into adulthood—a place where the road ahead is unknown and sometimes dark. Facing the darkness head on, Lily & Madeleine at times hark back to the female-driven post-punk band The Raincoats, delivering a distaff perspective that is equal parts beauty and toughness, sugar and salt.

“The thing that flags them as extraordinary is their sibling vocal blend, deep and seamless and relaxed.” New York Times

Many of the songs on Fumes also touch upon movement and transition, from leaving a situation to “find out who you are” (“Lips and Hips”), or to escape (“Cabin Fever,” “Ride Away”). The album is very much a travelogue that speaks to the essence of a restless creative spirit, and the sisters’ desire to break new ground.

“Fumes,” says Madeleine, “shows our transformation as musicians and as women, and was inspired by our experience on the road as well as the life experiences of people close to us. It’s a perfect reflection of this stage of our lives.”

Fumes arrived October 28th, 2014 on Asthmatic Kitty Records.

THE COSMIC MASS (Matthew Fox)

The Cosmic Mass: An Equinox Celebration & Participatory Community Ritual for All Ages

If “there is no community without ritual” as Malidoma Some observes, then the opposite might be true also. That building ritual helps to create community (since, after all the word “community” comes from two Latin words, “to share a common task together”).

The Cosmic Mass (TCM) is an interactive community dance celebration created by Matthew Fox in the 90′s that re-invents the form of worship.  The Cosmic Mass - Ashland will feature performance and visual artists from our own community as well as all those who come to participate and co-create.

It integrates elements of techno-rave, temple, art exhibit, dance hall, meditation, and intentional space to touch the deepest parts of our being and cultivate our relationship with our own personal form of spirituality within a community. Incorporating cosmology, ritual, immersive visual art, music, spoken word and the practice of dance, The Cosmic Mass invites participants of all spiritual traditions to engage body and spirit directly.

The Cosmic Mass reinvigorates Western ritual by deconstructing the forms of worship we have inherited from the modern era and going back to the most primal form of worship: dance. DJs and live musicians provide the musical ambiance and the VJ or video artist provides immersive images that tell the story of the theme celebrated. We dance in the presence of these images, bringing in the spirit of the theme.

Imagine experiencing your inner connection to the Divine, touching your sorrow, connecting with your creativity. Imagine feeling connected to a community of kindred spirits who inspire you to create positive change in the world. Imagine emerging from a worship celebration feeling that every element of your being has been engaged.

Impossible? No – this is the Cosmic Mass (TCM).  Join us!

Dumpstaphunk

Dumpstaphunk stands out among New Orleans’ best as one of the funkiest bands to ever arise from the Crescent City. Born on the Jazz & Heritage Festival stage, and descended from Neville family bloodlines, these soldiers of funk ignite a deep, gritty groove that dares listeners not to move. Their performances combine ingenious musicianship and complex funk and jazz arrangements with soulful melodies that are simple enough for anyone to enjoy. In Big Easy tradition, dueling baselines from Tony Hall and Nick Daniels III set off one of the dirtiest rhythm sections on the planet, while Ivan Neville lights up the Hammond B3 keys and cousin Ian Neville’s funky guitar riffs send the groove into overdrive. The band recently welcomed their newest member, Alvin Ford Jr. to the quintet, a New Orleans born and raised powerhouse drummer.

Dumpstaphunk tosses around lead vocals and four-part harmonies the way Sly & the Family Stone did, but with three studio albums under their belt, Dumpstaphunk stands on the merit of their own material. Songs like “Dancin’ To The Truth” off their latest record, Dirty Word (Red Hot Records), offer an escape into the funky sublime, sharing the true spirit of New Orleans with every note. Lovebite

his soulful project brings FUNK, R&B & Rock to a diverse range of fans. Packing dance floors, LOVEBITE brings a sonically unique spin with four part vocal harmonies and raging guitar solos to a somewhat 60's-style San Fransisco Funk. The ensemble writes original music and brings unique arrangements of obscure Funk, Rock & R&B. LOVEBITE burns with authenticity and a feeling that is infectious.

LOVEBITE also has a side project called ZEPDRIX which honors the music of Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix. The band is able to interpret Zeppelin's soulful, melodic phrasings with moving ferocity and deep funk groove. Guitarist, Jeff Pevar & Paul Turnipseed carry the Page solos with ease and true grit- while Jorgensen's vocals interperet Robert Plant's dramatic vocals with a power that honors Plant and adds even a bit extra feminine power. Ackerman holds the funk bass parts that sets Zeppelin apart from so many heavy rock bands, and Kriemelman has no trouble holding down John Bonham's infamous drum mastery.
During the Hendrix portion of ZEPDRIX, the band pairs to trio with Pevar, Ackerman, & Kriemelman. Jeff Pevar fronts the Hendrix tunes vocally and with an explosion of passionate guitar solos, he tips the hat to Jimi Hendrix while giving the music a Pevar- style guitar mania.

Orgone

Orgone is an 8-piece soul machine driven by Dan Hastie and Sergio Rios, once two kids from the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles united by a hunger for raw soul recordings.  While the musicians began by covering Booker T. & the MGs, The Meters, and other giants of soul, they eventually carved out a sound all their own.  Drawing on their love of Funkadelic, Santana, Muscle Shoals, and all things Stax, the duo sought to create the band that, if they were to hear for the first time, would be their instant favorite.  After living and working as session musicians for many years, they were still unable to find a studio that adequately captured their warm, gritty sound, so they decided to make one.  KillionSound Studios was hand-crafted as Orgone’s hub and home studio where they continue to create (including playing on a handful of Grammy-winning songs), rehearse, and record with Rios at the helm as chief engineer and Hastie as co-producer.

By teaming up with fiery soul singer Adryon de León, the band discovered the secret weapon that would take their sound to new heights.  With de León, Hastie on keys, Rios on guitar, and drummer Sam Halterman as the backbone, a deeply-rooted family of LA musicians makes up the rest of Orgone— Dale Jennings, bass, Will Phillips, percussion, Darren Cardoza, trombone, and JJ Kirkpatrick, trumpet.

Jelly Bread

Over a few short years of touring, Jelly Bread has risen from Reno/Lake Tahoe area favorites into a powerhouse quintet with a high-energy calling card that delivers a high-energy, chameleonic playlist all over the United States.  Jelly Bread’s distinct style is identified by a blend of desert twang meeting the urban tones of funk and rock. Exceptional songwriting and storytelling interlaced with four part harmonies, intricate “in-the-pocket” drum and bass grooves, swampy lap steel guitar, dirt under the fingernails guitar licks, tasty talkbox, “take-’em-to-church” organ come together into a sound that is downright appetizing.

Here, There & Everywhere, Jelly Bread’s upcoming album is due to be released this fall. The album was mixed by renowned engineer/producer Justin Phelps (Cake, Galactic, Fruition, The Mars Volta, The Neville Brothers, and Dead Kennedys among many others).  Jelly Bread has performed direct support for the likes of Robert Cray, Robert Randolph and the Family Band, Moe, Rusted Root, JJ Grey, Dragon Smoke (members of Galactic), The Motet, Ivan Neville’s Dumpstaphunk, Lukas Nelson and the Promise of the Real, Pimps of Joytime, Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds, Allen Stone Band, Orgone, Kyle Hollingsworth Band, Carolyn Wonderland, and The California Honeydrops. The band has also appeared at premiere festivals including the Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival, Safeway Waterfront Blues Festival, High Sierra, Joshua Tree, Strawberry, and Mammoth Festival of Beers and Bluesapalooza.

On a recent tour through the in the upper reaches of the Northwest states, Jelly Bread had a fortuitous encounter with American Idol winner, Taylor Hicks.  Taylor decided to sit in with Jelly Bread that evening for a couple songs on vocals and harmonica.  Footage of the collaboration can be viewed on the Video page.

Jelly Bread is co-fronted by powerhouse singer/gospel drummer, Cliff Porter, and southern-fried singer/guitarist, Dave Berry. They are backed by Jeremy Hunt on bass, Sean Lehe (formerly of Isabella and Poor Man’s Whiskey) on lead guitar, and Eric Matlock on keyboards and talk box.

Left is the Opening Band

Please note, this is mostly a standing room show, with only limited seats. If it is important for you to get a seat, it's first come first serve!

The Security Project is a collection of musical heavyweights exploring the early years of Peter Gabriel's illustrious solo career. Heavily focused on the singer's four eponymous albums from 1977 to 1982 (known among fans as Car, Scratch, Melt and Security), The Security Project has none other than the singer's '77-'86 drummer, Jerry Marotta, keeping the beat. And when this intriguing supergroup hit the stage at the Tupelo Music Hall in Londonderry, NH on December 13, the results were extraordinary.

Considering that Marotta's Security Project bandmates have also carved impressive individual niches performing left-field music (Trey Gunn with King Crimson, Michael Cozzi with Shriekback and Sky Cries Mary, Brian Cummins with Marillion's Mick Pointer, David Jameson with Beyond The Wall), it came as little surprise that the group succeeded in honoring the esoteric spirit of some of the most challenging material in Gabriel's 40-year post-Genesis adventure. Left

LEFT is a labor of love comprised of 5 of Southern Oregon's most accomplished and creative players. Originally conceived in 2009 as a local "side project" and vehicle to showcase Levick's extensive catalog , the band gradually moved closer to everybody's front burners as they began gaining popularity.

Because of the lineup and instrumentation (tons of acoustic and slide guitars), LEFT tends to create very rootsy/retro interpretations of Bret's songs which almost always, albeit sometimes surprisingly, works quite nicely.

Over the years they have also peppered their sets with a few choice covers including some songs by The Stones, Lou Reed, David Bowie, Dylan, Rickie Lee Jones and JJ Cale.
LEFT is an acronym for the last names of the 4 original members.

The current lineup is:
Bret Levick: Vocals , Guitars
Bob Evoniuk: (of One Horse Shy & Siskiyou Summit): Electric dobro, Vocals
Greg Frederick: (Eric Burdon, Buddy Miles, Bo Diddly, Nickel & Nail): Bass, Vocals
Matt Terreri: (Rebel Train, Funkamungus, ex Florida studio drummer): Drums, vocals
Don Harris: (Pat Travers Band) Keyboards (most recent addition)

Indubious

Indubious has continued to build a solid following through their fusion of dub reggae and EDM, furthering their opportunities to be performing artists in EDM festival markets. Their most recent album, Wake The Lion, gives them the credibility they need to stay afloat in the fast moving industry as it was produced by world famous electronica guru, Gaudi.

Their appearance at this year’s Wakarusa festival marked the band’s first time in Arkansas and only their second time on the east side of the country. Indubious is currently working on their 4th studio album and have plans to release a never before seen video concept in the upcoming “Wake The Lion” video dropping later this month. The trio filmed, directed, and edited the video in southern Oregon.

The band also has plans to premiere a new single in which they collaborated with Jamaican artists, Rootz Underground. According to keyboardist and lyricist, Evton B, “The song’s subject matter is pro organic – anti GMO farming in celebration of the laws that just passed here in southern Oregon in Josephine and Jackson counties banning the propagation of GMO crops.”

Clearly, the band is on an upward climb with plenty of things to look forward too. Be sure to stay updated with the band at the links below to find out any additional shows added on the Indubious Summer 2014, as well as release dates for the new single and music video for “Wake The Lion”!

Afrolicious has established itself as both one of the most legendary weekly parties in San Francisco, and of the top live/electronic bands on the scene. Started as a weekly dance party featuring DJ’s and brothers Pleasuremaker and Señor Oz alongside percussionists, MC’s and horn players, and an amazing crowd from day one. Over the years it has evolved as founding DJ/Producer Pleausremaker (Joe McGuire) alongside brother Señor Oz (Oz McGuire) hooked up with some of the most exciting personalities in the Bay Area music scene and started writing original music under the alias Afrolicious.

Around 2010 the live Pleasuremaker band started including some of this new ‘Afrolicious’ material and added more of the percussionists and vocalists from the weekly party to form what is now the Afrolicious band. Between their weekly party and sound system shows that involve the brothers DJing alongside live percussion, they also have a 8-12 piece live band that emphasizes the organic elements, instrumentation, and energy of a live ensemble combined with club heavy beats and textures the weekly party has come to be known for. Afrolicious band and sound system have performed at such legendary venues as Red Rocks, Sierra Nevada World Music Festival, Electric Forest Festival, Snow Globe, Burningman, Sea of Dreams, The Independent, Great American Music Hall, Elbo Room in San Francsico (5 plus years weekly residency), Cielo, Nublu, Bembe, Zanzibar, Silent Frisco.

Anyone familiar with the Pimps of Joytime live experience knows the feeling—it’s that moment when a deep bluesy groove morphs into a full-on EDM dance beat, or the sensation when the wide-eyed audience collectively elevates in sync with the band’s tangible energy.

On Jukestone Paradise, the Pimps of Joytime raise the bar with swagger to spare, crafting ten cohesive songs that ring out like the soundtrack for a ride through the diverse Brooklyn neighborhood where their sound materialized. Pulling from lead guitarist and singer Brian J’s deep discography of influences, the creation of Jukestone Paradise began a decade ago, when he penned anthems like “Sky” and “Freedom Dancer,” all the way up to the album’s studio recording sessions.

Get Tickets!

You might accurately call the Pimps of Joytime a ‘post-genre’ band; they’re a group whose sound—even within a single song—mirrors the diversity of our era’s musical tastes. “It’s a sonic tapestry that’s representative of this time and place that we live in,” says Brian J.

That’s where the Pimps excel, by mashing up ‘70s funk tones with modern dance beats, mixed with original samples creating their mosaic sound. For listeners weary of today’s DJ culture but eager to dance with abandon, the Pimps of Joytime are the antidote.

“At our core, the Pimps of Joytime are not just dance music,” says Brian J of the band’s three-part harmony attack. “My first vocal mentor was a doo-wop singer, so I have a long-time love affair with vocal harmonies.”

With the release of Jukestone Paradise, the band makes official their solid touring lineup, featuring dual female vocalists and percussionists Mayteana Morales and Cole WilliamsX. And they’re hitting the road hard, continuing a constant touring schedule that’s already left prominent sets at festivals like Voodoo, Outside Lands, Bonnaroo and High Sierra in their wake.

Behind the frontlines are bassist/keyboardist David Bailis and drummer John Staten, forming the rhythmic backbone of the Pimps’ audible collage. And for Jukestone Paradise, they called in a few friends to lend their talents, including Ivan Neville, who lends New Orleans flavor to “Sky,” and Rubblebucket’s Alex Toth, who co-wrote the quirky and infectious “Dance Cardia.”

Just as Brooklyn has changed since the Pimps started, so has the band’s sound. But as Williamsburg gentrifies, the Pimps of Joytime’s diverse evolution keeps the neighborhood’s spirit alive. That spirit goes into the Pimps’ pot, over a soulful roux of rhythm and groove.

Marv Ellis and WE Tribe

In late 2013, five forces of nature on the Northwest music scene gravitated toward each other and it did not take long to figure out they had something special.

In their first year as a band Marv Ellis & WE Tribe have covered a lot of ground; touring the West Coast and playing internationally, buying a tour bus and recording a debut album, “Five for One.” Blending electronic techniques new and classic, with acoustic instrumentation and hip-hop vocals, Marv Ellis & WE Tribe are poised to let the rest of the country in on what people here know: that the Northwest might have a different approach to hip-hop, but it is worth a listen...

Cherry Poppin' Daddies

Tickets: $30 in advance / $35 day of
Doors: 8:30 pm / 21 and Over

This is will be a jam-packed night of high-energy, hip twistin tunes! We have three, yes, THREE, bands lined up before the Poppin Daddies!

John Dough Boys, Flat 5 Flim Flam, Step It Up n Go. Videos posted in this thread.

Get Tickets!

Ever since they first formed some 25 years ago, the Cherry Poppin’ Daddies made it their mission to veer from genre to genre across the musical map, choosing to follow their own muse regardless of feedback from fans and critics alike. Truth be told, individuality and defiance have always been part of the band’s DNA, and have, in turn, reinforced their rebellious reputation. Granted, though that image is well deserved, the ability to bend the boundaries has been simultaneously tempered and informed by an adherence to an older, now vanished tradition, grounded in Tin Pan Alley, Swing music and the great American songbook.

According to the band’s longtime leader, singer/songwriter Steve Perry, the band’s mantra has remained the same – “the obstacle is the path”, that is, to pursue unexpected and difficult avenues that challenge both themselves as artists and modern sensibilities while at the same time adhering to standards and erstwhile traditions of American popular song.

Get Tickets!

To that point, the band’s new opus titled Please Return the Evening: The Cherry Poppin’ Daddies Salute the Music of the Rat Pack – was designed as a challenge to their craftsmanship in the recording studio, attempting to do justice to original magnificent, orchestral arrangements and recordings, while being limited to their 8 piece band inside a small Eugene, Oregon recording studio.

The recording taps into a tradition established by three of the hippest singers of all time, unique personalities that helped patent the concept of cool. Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr. When they worked in tandem as the legendary Rat Pack, Sinatra, Martin and Davis found the perfect combination – one that fused sheer swagger with an easy, amiable style. That approach helped define the cultural undercurrents of that critical period from the late ‘50s to the early ‘60s.

Please Return the Evening offers up a superb set of standards that have come to epitomize the Rat Pack’s repertoire – songs like Fly Me To The Moon, and I’m Going To Live Until I Die, that look upward with the singular optimism that energized America at the dawn of the ‘60s, a time that would prove to be the twilight of the swing era.

“We’re really fascinated by that mid century American can-do attitude,” Perry insists. It’s in that singular spirit, a combination of attitude, affability, and desire to go all in– that’s made the Cherry Poppin’ Daddies interesting as well.

Get Tickets!

The Daddies will also debuting songs from an upcoming (late 2105) album that will be called The Boop-A-Doo. This album will be the second of a planned trilogy of cover tunes designed to outline for fans some of the Daddies swing influences. The Boop-A-Doo covers a much earlier era than Please Return the Evening, songs that might have had their birth at the Cotton Club during the Prohibition era- roughly 1928-1937. Tenor banjo driven tunes like: Lets Misbehave, 42nd Street, and Top Hat showcase the bands versatility and playing chops. Undoubtedly, the Daddies will once again set dance floors ablaze, but this time the music is destined to inspire many a manic Charleston.

Cherry Poppin’ Daddies has always prided itself on its craft and musicianship, superior skills that have allowed them to excel in whatever format they choose to tackle. “In many ways, the cover albums encapsulate everything we’ve woven into our music before,” Perry maintains. “Like I am want to say, “The obstacle is the path” we have always thrown difficulties in our own way and had to fight to overcome them. Tackling these eras in a legitimate fashion we knew was going to be hard, but in the end it helped us to build muscles and understand our craft. It also shines a different light on our body of work and who we are as a band. We see ourselves as coming from a Swing, Jazz and Tin Pan Alley tradition that is almost an extinct lineage in music. We aspire to be worthy of carrying the torch but we have always striven to create our own modern, iconoclastic version. Frankly, we feel the tradition we measure our efforts against offers the ultimate example of what modern music should be, but sadly isn’t, aspiring to.

Please join us for an incredibly touching and important evening to learn about the Syrian Refugee situation and to help the cause.

We hope that this film will help eliminate hate toward everyday muslims, raise awareness about the state of the refugee crisis, and help to raise some funds for the refugees themselves.

WHETHER YOU CAN MAKE IT TO THE EVENT OR NOT, PLEASE HELP

Salam (Hello) Neighbor is a film and campaign to connect the world to refugees. The film follows the journey of Chris and Zach as the first filmmakers ever allowed to be registered and given a tent inside of a refugee camp.

Q&A with Dr. John Sager who has spent time in the Al-Zaatari refugee camp featured in this film

Over last twenty years Dr. Sager participated in medical trips to Nepal, Pakistan, Malawi, Zambia and most recently Syria and Greece.

Dr. John Sager

Dr. John Sager

John Sager grew up in Pakistan and went to an International school.  His family moved to Ashland in 1973 and he attended Ashland schools (graduating AHS in 1981). He attended Lewis and Clark College, Northwestern University Medical School and completed his OHSU Family Practice Residency in Portland, OR.  Dr. Sager worked in Alaska for 4 years with the Health Service in Ketchikan.  In 1998 he began his private practice in Ashland, and recently joined Asante.

Three years ago I googled “Syrian Refugee medical help” and found a group called the Syrian American Medical Society that was sending doctors to Syria, Turkey and Jordan to help in providing medical care to Syrian refugees. That was my first trip and I have gone roughly every six months ever since. We treat anyone who needs our help along the Syrian-Jordanian border including in Al-Zaatari refugee camp, where the movie was filmed.
